Priscilla Sani-Chimwele is the founder and CEO of Wala Ltd, a social enterprise that specialises in the productive use of solar for agriculture. Wala focuses on solar powered technologies for irrigation and agricultural processing.

Priscilla was awarded the prestigious 2020 Rising Energy Leaders Award by EEP Africa. This award was created to shine a spotlight on young professionals who are leading the clean energy transition in Africa. The winners demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing clean energy solutions, professional growth or achievement in the sector and ambitious goals for the future.

We sat down with Priscilla to learn more about her experiences as an inspiring Woman in Energy.

Why do you believe in Africa’s energy sector?

Energy is a catalyst. Fixing Africa’s energy sector will create the conducive environment needed to fix many of the other social and economic challenges Africa faces.

What is your advice for women who say they struggle to make themselves heard in the workplace?

Your voice matters. You have something valuable to say. Speak up – make them listen. Holding back could deny a perspective and solution only you can see.

If you were your country's energy minister what would you do to make it easier for women to enter/stay/thrive in the energy sector?

I would decree a quota for women in energy education program, add soft skills training for women throughout energy program and create entrepreneurship development programs for women in energy focused on funding, mentorship, information and networking.

What is your favourite book/quote to recommend as inspiration to others?

My favourite book that I would recommend to entrepreneurs is Originals by Adam Grant. My favourite book to recommend to women leaders would be Dear Madam President by Jennifer Palmieri.

Who would you like as a mentor at work if you could ask anyone in the world? Why?

Beyonce Knowles-Carter. She has the work ethic and drive of a thousand women and seems to do very hard things with elegance and grace.
