Robben Island’s solar installation by solar energy firm SOLA Future Energy has drastically reduced the island’s reliance on costly diesel power. The attending delegates will learn about the largest combined solar and lithium-ion storage facility in South Africa in a uniquely historical setting.

Solar PV tour

Visit the City of Cape Town’s Bloemhof rooftop solar and Kraaifontein floating solar installations. The Kraaifontein installation represent South Africa’s first floating solar PV project at a municipality’s wastewater treatment plan and the project aims to quantify the evaporation savings and the relative energy generated. This will be followed by a visit to the silo solar installation on the Lourensford wine estate. Here delegates will visit the innovative energy efficiency solar project, hosted by SPS Africa on the Lourensford wine estate, a technical tour will be conducted on the ground-mount with the Tesla Power Pack as well as the solar panels on the roof of the winery.

Visit the Steenbras Pumped Storage power stations and get insight into how surplus national generating capacity is employed to utilise relatively low cost off-peak electricity available at night to pump water from a lower to an upper storage reserve. Lunch and a tour of the Lourensford silo solar installation are included in this tour.
Innovation Tour

Innovation Tour

Our Innovation Tour which will take in some of the laboratory testing work being done by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) on hydrogen fuel cells, battery energy storage and SCADA systems.Lunch and a tour of the Lourensford silo solar installation are included in this tour.

  1. Detailed itineraries will be sent once selection has been made with final departure and return times per site visit 
  2. Please ensure if you book a flight out of Cape Town on Friday 10 June it is no earlier than 20:00.
  3. All site visits include the following: 
    • Tea/coffee and pastries at registration 
    • Refreshments on the coach 
    • Light lunch with refreshments 
    • All transport to and from the CTICC 
    • Site visit information pack 
    • Expert led tours at the sites
